Essential Oil Safety
Essential oils safety is an important topic for you and your family! Check out the tips below for how to safely use essential oils for yourself and your family!
Diluting essential oils
One thing to think about when using it comes to using essential oils safely is diluting with a carrier oil or using an unscented lotion when applying them topically. Diluting essential oils doesn’t make them any less effective. They’re just as effective (if not more effective!) as using them straight out of the bottle and diluting makes the oils safe for sensitive skin.

Make it easier on yourself by making a roller bottle blend of the essential oils you regularly use. It’s a convenient, mess-free way to use essential oils. Click here to watch how simple and fast it is to make a roller bottle.
Carrier oil options: my favorite for everyday use is fractionated coconut oil (FCO)! Other options include: argan oil, almond oil, avocado oil, grape seed oil, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, olive oil. I frequently use an unscented lotion and calming oil, like Lavender or Roman Chamomile, on my kids before bed.
Should I avoid any oils with my kids?
One question I frequently get is, “what essential oils should I avoid using with my kids?,” and rightfully so, that’s a very important question! All essential oils can be safely use, but there are a few things to keep in mind about certain oils.
There are some “hot” essential oils, such as Cinnamon Bark, Oregano, Cassia, Clove, Thyme, Black Pepper, Lemongrass, Ginger, that feel hot on the skin when applied undiluted. These essential oils, along with cooling oils like Peppermint, Wintergreen, should be diluted before applying to your skin as an adult and should be heavily diluted if you’re using them on kids.
The great news – there are SO many essential oils available for you to use, including “safer, less hot” essential oils that can be used on your kids and sensitive skin.
Peppermint is a great option for adults to use with a high body temperature, but it can cause skin irritations to young and/or sensitive skin. Gentler options for sensitive skin would be Patchouli, Juniper Berry or Arborvitae
Instead of Oregano for immune support, try Tea Tree, Copaiba, Frankincense, Stronger or Rose
Instead of Eucalyptus or Thyme for respiratory support, try Frankincense, Copaiba, Green Mandarin, Arborvitae or Cardamom
Instead of Black Pepper or Ginger for digestive support, try Cardamom, Fennel, Wild Orange or Tamer
Instead of Lemongrass for joint and muscle discomfort, try Copaiba, Frankincense or Rescuer
Instead of Peppermint or Wintergreen, try Rescuer or Tamer
Pro tips:
Remember: less, more often, is better
Daily, proactive use is best
Combine a carrier oil and essential oil in the palm of your hand, or pre-dilute in a roller bottle for easier application
